"A woman convicted two weeks ago of being the "D.C. Madam" hanged herself Thursday, apparently making good on her vow never to go to prison for running a high-end Washington prostitution ring.
The body of Deborah Jeane Palfrey was found in a shed near her mother's home about 20 miles northwest of Tampa. Police said the 52-year-old Palfrey left at least two suicide notes and other writings to her family in a notebook, but they did not disclose their contents.
Palfrey apparently hanged herself with nylon rope from the shed's ceiling. Her mother discovered the body..."

I had contact with her lawyers because I helped do legal research for a motion for a high profile local resident accused of soliciation. This fricken breaks my heart. Fuck the politicials and the prosecutors in this case. Why did anyone care about this? Why? Who was she hurting? They are all murders.

Re: So Tragic. D.C. Madam Kills Self.
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 4:45 PMMake that two people dead from society's demonization of consentual sex.
"...One of the escort service employees was former University of Maryland, Baltimore County, professor Brandy Britton, who was arrested on prostitution charges in 2006. She committed suicide in January before she was scheduled to go to trial."
You know, this about makes me believe that there really is a patriarchy out there trying to destroy women...and I am practically a masculinist.

There are conspiracies because the world has shadow players. -

Re: So Tragic. D.C. Madam Kills Self.
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:59 AMI agree that this is a tragic story. Our society still thinks that conseniting adults need permission from the government to have sex for money.
Still, I do not think she was murdered. The story from her mother kind of leads to the credibility of her committing suicide.
That being said. I am weary of panderers. Sex work is fine if it is without coercion. Otherwise it is a form of rape. Prostitution should be legalized. However, I feel strongly about sexual slavery. This isn't sex, it is paying to rape someone.
It is hard for the law to distinguish pimps and slavers from managers or escort hosts or for that matter, sex workers from sex slaves. Only the "worker" can tell you what quality of life they have or what conditions they live under. As long as sex work is illegal, the law will not help those who are being victimized.
Do we know M Palfrey? I wish our media machine would stop this sensationalizing of any sex "scandal" and focus more on the honest human element of sex and sex work. But we do love a good story, don't we? -

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 2:49 PMRegarding the issue of sexual slavery, all of her escorts were college graduates. One was a former professor.
