won't we take the edge away from a business and thereby cost sex workers money? And I heard that there is an event coming up, showing a coupla films, one of which is about how legalization sux in the Nevada brothels.

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Sat, February 10, 2007 - 7:13 PMOne hope in decriminalizing prostitution is that it would enable women to leave abusive or exploitive pimps. In this scenario, their income might rise.

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Sat, February 10, 2007 - 8:05 PMif it were legal, many might make more money because more people would partake (since its legal, they dont have to worry about going to jail for it). one would probably need a license (costing money) and would have to submit to regular std and aids testing (costing money) but overall, prostitutes would likely make more money imo. -

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Sun, February 11, 2007 - 5:12 AMI agree with both the previous posters.
the cost of being illegal far outweighs the opposite...but what form it takes depends on the `structure` of agreement..ie:just making it legal could just change the identity of pimps to another more powerful controller..whereas de-criminalising it gives the sexworkers their own control & agreements.
Until we across the board de-criminalise prostitution..we as a profession unto itself cannot ever be seen to take part in any costruction..we are helpless in our criminality. -

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 10:33 AMAgreed, I believe legalizing prosititution would over all improve the quality of life for sex workers, clients and the society at large for a variety of reasons. Those reasons include, but are not limited to power of voice and legal protection. The key is that _sex workers_ need to be proactive about lobbying and creating the documents. It's all about languaging. The true power is in asserting human rights and increasing respect and understanding.
Not to dismiss the original inquiry; yes, the energy of sex work would change. But the real question is that bad? If things went poorly in Nevada, how do we rewrite the laws so that it's a win win solution? Bad laws get wrtten all the time. It's time to change that. -

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 2:56 AMThere are many sexworkers & ex-sexworkers who are very pro-active in both lobbying |& education rebecca. I agree tghough with all you say especially about language.
I feel though that the best things that stop prejudice is humour & education-together. We do not see enough of this in the media eye. Publicity for sexowrkers only usually comes t a time of media attention when say sexworkers are hurt or killed. which just throws us into these never ending circles of discussion- when they ask sexworkers, usually street workers to be interviewed on various news type programmes. as yet I have to see a real concerted attempt at talking to sexworkers on television etc from ALL walks of the sex industry & not just victim centered.
There are many educated & happy, intelligent sexworkers just itching to get the opportunity to voice both their views on the industry & sex itself...just give them the platform! The way that sex work is projected leaves so much to be desired & not until we listen & take their views seriously will we at least get the opportunity to move on & be heard.
Though I am from the UK, I do know about sexwork around the world & in nevada also. Whilst they still have cat-houses controlled by men & their whims..things will not change.
The sex industry should be defined by the people within in & run by them..rather than `all knowing socially accepted` managers. -

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 3:00 AMFor instance in Amsterdam..although prostitution is accepted it is not de-criminalised, just tolerated. Those in the brothels & windows are nearly all from third world countries..who will tolerate a lot more than others. Half of their salaries go to the `house owner`..the other quarter to taxes etc..the quarter left is their income. They have to work long hours & have no say who they accept as a client. That is why there are still majority sexworkers still working outside the `safe system`.

Re: If we decriminalize prostitution....
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 1:18 PMDecriminalization would have to be done carefully so the workers would not be tied up by new regulations, which could ruin business and rob them of an ability to a private provider. If a worker has to work within a bothel much of their salary would go to the owner and the cost of services would be very high. That does not solve the problems for workers it just moves it into a different arena.
